Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic and public speechwriter. Feminist Frequency was created by Sarkeesian. Sarkeesian is also a graduate of York University master's in social theological, philosophical and political thought. Alongside being an acclaimed public speaker, she's given speeches at the TEDxWomen conference and the United Nations Broadband Working Group. While a student at university, Sarkeesian became fascinated by the issue of gender equality and the rights of women at an early stage. The site was created by a woman in her early 20s determined to make a series of web videos that would examine gender roles in video games. But, she was victimized by online harassment. She was not deterred by the assault, actually, it just reinforced her desire to become a media critic and feminist. She is a recipient of several awards for her contributions to feministism. Anita Sarkeesian won awards for her role as a critic of media and also founded Feminist Frequency. Feminist Frequency is a non-profit organization that examines how women are depicted in contemporary pop culture.
