Taylor Russell McKenzie was conceived in Vancouver, British Columbia on July 18th in 1994. She also grew up in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. Russell was born to both black and white parents. She grew up on her mother's side. She recalled that growing up she was not accepted by her peers due to the colour of her skin. [3] Her parents were struggling financially and had to relocate 16 times to pursue her father's job. Russell stated that in spite of all the struggles they faced, there was always an opportunity to reinvent, to develop something new. Russell's parents faced financial hardship and she was constantly moving. At the age of 18, she took her first acting class and finally found her place. She used the money she earned from her job to buy a car and drove to Los Angeles, to audition. She would return to work after her funds ran out and then resume making auditions again. This continued for four consecutive years, until she finally landed her first TV role on television.
